Tamarah Searchwell in The Heiress

U GROW GIRL! Tamarah Searchwell is Lavinia Penniman in The Heiress.

Theater goers were treated to an outstanding performance by Tamarah and the entire cast in The Heiress, written by Augustus & Ruth Goetz and directed by Donis Leonard.   The production was presented by California State University, Dominguez Hills Theatre and Dance Department in the Edison Studio Theatre.  Family and friends turned out in support of  Tamarah.

The action takes place in the front parlour of  Dr. Austin Sloper’s house in Washington Square, New York, in the year 1893.  The production was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams.

In the year 1893, Williams, an African American surgeon, was the first doctor to successfully perform open heart surgery.  In 1891 he established the Provident Hospital and Training Association for African American nurses.  The hospital served the city of Chicago as a whole and utilized doctors of all races.  In 1894, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was appointed as Chief Surgeon at the Freedman’s Hospital in Washington, D.C. where his extraordinary talent and influence would be far reaching.

Recognition of his efforts came when doctors from all over the country traveled to Washington to view the hospital and to sit in on surgery performed there.  Among them would have been Dr. Austin Sloper, representing New York’s Washington Square.

Tamarah is a graduate of California State University, Dominguez Hills with a degree in Theater Arts.  Her other performances include The Righteous Saints of Greater Faith, Lend Me A Tenor, and When Divas Were Divas.  Tamarah is a faithful member of  U GROW GIRL! Circle of Thought.
